New in 5.3

Stoneware, Inc. is excited to announce the release of webOS version 5.3. The new features and enhancements included in 5.3 has allowed Stoneware to redefine web desktop virtualization and its critical role in the shift from client-server to cloud computing. This document will provide readers with an overview of some of the new features and services that are available in the 5.3 release. The details for all 5.3 product enhancments and feature updates are listed below by category.

webOS - Stoneware's webOS presents a virtual web desktop interface to users that access the webNetwork system. webOS is designed to run inside the user's web browser and can be accessed from anywhere the user has an Internet connection.

  • Ability to minimize web applications in the webOS system tray
  • Mac Virtual Web Desktop personality
  • GZip Compression to optimize load time of the webOS interface
  • webOS desktop "lock down" available in Profile Admin
  • Thin client and window cleanup configuration settings available


Single Sign-on - New features and enhancements have been made to many of the single sign-on services that ship with webNetwork 5.3. Many of the enhancements are centered around web authentication to both internally and externally hosted systems.

  • SAML ( Security Assertion Markup Language ) - markup language for authenticating and authorizing access between two authentication/service providers. webNetwork provides a SAML service to respond to authentication requests by service providers such as Google.
  • Delegated Authentication - authentication service designed to respond to authentication and authorization requests by Software as a Service (SaaS) providers such as Salesforce.com.
  • Form Authentication Enhancements - new "In the Flow" parser supports significantly more authentication scenarios for web page logins.


Stoneware Lockbox - Lockbox (secret authentication store) has been updated to add many new authentication options related to the storage and management of user credentials.

  • Alternate Identity Support allows the user to set multiple identities for a single Lockbox index. The user can select and set their identity before accessing the application or service.
  • Grouping enables the administrator to "group" Lockbox indices to simplify end user configuration. An example would be the grouping of "Mail ID" and "Mail Password" inside of the Password Manager utility.
  • Input Masks provides the administrator with a means of setting a mask for a selected Lockbox. The mask will enforce certain types of input restrictions by the user such as characters, numeric values, and length.


Groupware Integration Pack - The Integration Pack provides users with integrated access to their corporate calendars, inbox, tasks, and contacts. The Groupware Integration Pack supports both Novell's GroupWise and Microsoft Exchange.

  • Groupware Inbox provides access to a user's corporate inbox from the webOS or portal interface. Supports both read-only and update mode.
  • Groupware Contacts provides access to a user's corporate contacts from the webOS or portal interface. Support both read-only and update mode.
  • Groupware Tasks provides access to a user's corporate tasks from the webOS or portal interface. Support both read-only and update mode.


File Services - new updated user interface to provide users with native file system and desktop support.

  • New "Drag and Drop" File Services interface. Allows end users to "drag and drop" files from the desktop to the browser and vise-versa.
  • Online Edit - allows a user to edit files located on the backend network file system without the hassle of downloading and uploading the document.
  • Toggling webDav and Email - allows the administrator to enable and disable webDav and email on a selected file services node

Folder Monitor - Folder Monitor was designed to scan a file system directory on a local workstation and move its contents to a backend network file system.

  • Automatically backup critical workstation files to a network file system or shared directory
  • Redirect local workstation output and downloads to a network file system in a thin client environment
  • Automatically move remote user documents from their laptops and home desktops to their enterprise HOME directory
  • Automated file transfer across the web without using FTP of SSH

teamPages - teamPage updates provide organizations more flexibility in building collaborative groups through the sharing of web services and resources.

  • Team tasks have been linked to the team's calendar so the starting and ending dates of a task are automatically placed on the calendar
  • Team Web Page feature allows the team leader to create a team web page with the integrated online HTML editor
  • Global search feature added to allow team members to perform keyword searches across all team page templates
  • teamPage "read-only" feature disables the ability for team members to update or add content to the team page.
  • Team folders allow the administrator to specify a unique team folder to hold documents and attachments

Login Balancer - Login Balancer is an easy to install, balancing tool which will direct login requests between two or more relays. The tool was designed to provide basic balancing features for the front end relays that manage user login requests.

  • Balance user login requests between two or more relays.
  • Verifies a relay is responding before sending a user to the relay's login page.
  • Runs on any operating system platform that supports the Sun 1.5 JVM (i.e. - Windows, Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X).
